When selecting an accommodation in Japan, there are several different room types to choose from. Which one to decide on depends on several factors including budget, style, and the number of travelers. However, an important distinction to make is that Japan’s room types and how they define it are different from other countries. To avoid this confusion when reserving your accommodations, we’ve listed the common types of rooms. The floor plans below are just examples of room types, and they may not necessarily reflect the exact room you stay at in Japan.
Twin Room – 2 beds in a single room. This is the most popular room type in Japanese hotels. There may also be an option for an Extra, which is a hideaway sofa or roll-in bed for accommodating a third guest.
Double Room – A room with 1 bed large enough for two people. This room doesn’t have the option of adding an extra bed. The size of the room is typically smaller than a twin room.
Queen Room – A Double room with a Queen size bed.
King Room – A Double room with a King size bed.
Single Room – A room with 1 twin-sized bed for 1 person only.
Meanwhile, the types of rooms you encounter in traditional accommodations such as a ryokan differ from western style hotels:
Japanese Room – This room has futon bedding large enough for one person each. Japanese rooms may or may not have an attached bath and toilet.
Wayoshitsu – This is a Japanese room with at least 1 bed, and will be listed as a “Western Sleeping Area” in your tour quote. These rooms may or may not have an attached bath and toilet, and may or may not have a private hot spring bath.
