Miyajima, which literally means “shrine island”, is located in the Seto Inland Sea (Seto Naikai), and is a part of Hiroshima Prefecture. It is considered to be a sacred place and it provides a stunning example of the ability of the Japanese people to seamlessly blend architecture with natural beauty.
Deer and monkeys wander freely around Miyajima, especially on Mt. Misen, the tallest mountain on the island, where a good view of the Seto Inland Sea can be had. The red torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine is set in front of Itsukushima Shrine and appears to be floating in the water – along with Matsushima and Amanohashidate, this breathtaking view is considered to be one of the three most scenic in Japan.
Miyajima is a great place to stay at a traditional ryokan inn and have a full course seafood kaiseki dinner. If you love oysters then you will be in heaven.
Renovation works on Miyajima’s famous floating torii gate started in June 2019. The torii gate is now covered up by a partially transparent scaffolding. Furthermore, a bridge has been built on the left side of the gate (when viewed from the shrine) to aid the renovation works. A date for the completion of the renovation works has not been set yet. In addition, renovation works are currently conducted on the western side of the complex (around the entrance) from September 2020 to December 2022.
