Lake Biwa is located in Shiga Prefecture near Kyoto. The lake takes its name from its natural shape, which resembles a traditional Japanese lute called Biwa (lute in Japanese). It is the largest Japanese lake and with around 235 kilometers of shoreline, Lake Biwa offers plenty of sights to discover. Around the lake you will find plenty of picturesque towns such as Hikone or Omi Hachiman. Hikone is a small city at the shores of Lake Biwa. The city is most famous for its castle, one of only four castles in Japan designated as national treasures. Omi Hachiman is known for its nicely preserved old town and canal where visitors can enjoy traditional boat cruises through the historic districts. In Summer, Omimaiko Beach is a popular getaway from Kyoto on the west side of Lake Biwa, with white sand and groves of shady pines.
